Project WWWT Day 4 of 72 - Netherlands/Belgium

22 May 2017

Rachel and her son HN is joining us from Singapore today and we met up with them at Schiphol Airport. Naaman and Eden was really excited when they met HN and ran around as though the airport is their playground. Bless their little hearts. From thereon, we took a train (Thalys) to Brussels Midi station to further transfer to the Intercity train towards Bruges. We only have 14 minutes to perform the transfer and needless to say, we missed the connecting train, hence we have to wait for the next train. Good thing that our tickets allowed for us to take any connecting train towards Bruges.

The train stopped in a couple of other stops and somehow, one of our luggages got stolen! Thank God there are no valuables or should I say "Precious" items in that luggages except for the instant noodles, rice, herbal soup packets, lup cheong (chinese sausages) etc. We lodged a police report at Bruges station and I am hopeful that this will not dampen our spirit. We could always replenish the supply at another station.

At Bruges station, we initially intend to walk to our accomodation with all 5, I meant 4 of our luggages. After making a quick check, the large taxi (Mercedes Vito) will only costs €12-13, so we decided to go with this option instead and the final fair turned out quick accurate!

We are staying in De Drie Koningen at Twijnstraat 17 and this property is a beaut! There are a few things that I thought could have been better such as provision of coffee beans/powder (There is a coffee machine though), working heating machine, an extra pair of kitchen knife or two, serving plates and most importantly, elevator. I have to carry all my luggages up the second floor. The kitchen comes with induction hobb, dishwasher, cooking oil, olive oil, black pepper corn and salt so it works out fine for me. There is a Carrefour Express nearby (3 minutes walk) and you can get most of your grocery needs there albeit basic (ham, bread, eggs, fruits, salads, pasta, rice etc.) and it opens from 8am to 730pm. There is a more equipped supermart by the name of Super Markt but its further away (about 8 minutes walk) and opens from 830am to 730pm.

We spent most of the day just chilling and resting in the apartment to allow for Rachel and HN to adjust to the timezone as well as to catch up on the lost sleep while taking the flight here. Will explore this beautiful & quaint town tomorrow.

We did head out to have diner during the evening and went to the street diagonally behind the street where we are staying. I initially thought of dining at De Gouden Kroes but it was closed, then I proceeded to my second choice, the Pili Pili but the Reception told us it was fully booked (what are the odds of a double strike? Often), hence we try to pick any other restaurant and chosen Carlito's Italian Restaurant. Food is decent and price is average. They serve kids meal at €10 per plate and the serving portion is asian adult portion! Ordered the Osso Buco with tagiatelle. The pasta is a little too well done for me as it has lost that al dente-ness that I am looking for but the Osso Buco itself was scrumptious!
