Project WWWT Day 2 of 72 - Lisse, The Netherlands

20th May 2017

The first day was spent mostly to help us recover from the jetlag. Amazingly, the boys was coping well but yours truly was a little under the weather. Fortunately, after much essential oil massages, oral application and diffusing, I am getting better although much damage has been done to my nose... it started to peel a little.

Today, we proceed with the original plan of visiting Keukenhof, which literally translate to "Kitchen Garden". This garden is the main tourist attraction in Lisse and if you didn't visit Keukenhof, you didn't visit Lisse. The garden has a limitted opening season every year and this year's lasts admission date falls on 21st May 2017. A couple of tips for any of you planning to visit 1) Go early in the morning (It opens at 7AM) to avoid a crowded garden. Keukenhof is beeming with tourists in the noon; and 2) Go during the month of April. Most of the flowers/display is either trimmed or not in their best condition. The area around Keukenhof is a plantation for Tulips, so if you must go during May, at least try early May.

We left Keukenhof around 12noon because we needed to check out of our hotel although we have only covered half of the garden. The admission fee is €16 per adult and parking costs €6 per admission and you will need to pay for the parking at the ticket counter itself. There are plenty to keep yourself and/or your children busy at Keukenhof aparts from the beautiful flower display such as the play ground, petting zoo, boat rides around the tulip plantation which costs €8 per adult and €4 per children below 12 years old (You can just cycle or drive around Lisse to see all the tulips plantation, just make sure you are there around April to early May).

Note: Naaman played this and while I give him a swing, despite cautioning him to hold tight and not let go, he let go and fell flat on his face on the sand. Naaman is such an OCD but when it comes to cleanliness, he took the cake! He wouldn't walk on grass nor sand regardless of whether it is on the beach of otherwise. Once we went to Lang Tengah Island, an island off the coast of Terengganu in Malaysia, he vomitted after walking for 1 minute on the sand. So after he fell flat on his face, you can literally tell that he lost it! He lie down on the ground for a good minute and refused to stand. He kept crying and his expression was almost like (not to belittle the experience of real life victims) as if he has been violated... I apologised and it took a while before he forgiven me > <

Before we left Lisse, my wife missed the Carrot cake served by Het Tussen Station so we make a second trip there again to pack a slice of their delicious Carrot Cake. My wife never fancied carrot cakes and this carrot cake makes her wanted to head back for a second slice is a real testament of its scrumptiousness. The cake is a little different as compared to those I had. Most are sweet but this one is savory with a touch of sweetness. Rich with spices but not overpowering to the palate. Filled with mouth after mouth of carrots and yet maintained a firm form with soft texture as it touches the tongue. I usually do not hunt for best places to dine nor spent a lot in dining while travelling (Especially in Project WWWT), so this find is considered a gem an I highly recommend it. Het Tussen Station: Stationsweg 59, 2161 AM Lisse.

After we checked in Best Western Airport Hotel back in Schiphol, we spent the rest of the day in the hotel to rest. When you travel with young children, do not over tire them. Let them have a loose itinerary and be flexible with your plans too.
