Project WWWT Day 3 of 72 - Giethoorn, The Netherlands

21 May 2017

Today was meant to visit Zaanse Schans but decided that there is a better place to visit since we had rented a car for the entire Netherlands leg. We are travelling east to a tune of 140Km. We are visiting Giethoorn. The drive to Giethoorn is bearable from Hoofdorpp and takes around 1 hour and 15minutes to 1 hour and 30minutes with some allowance for the waiting time of 2 draw bridges.

When you reached, you may question whether this is really the place. The beauty lies 400-500m walk into the floating village and when you are there you will ooh and aah and thank me later. You can either choose to rent a boat and operate it on your own (approx. €25 per hour and lesser per hour if you go for 2 hours), take a guided boat tour (€6 per adult and €3 for children under 12yo) or you could save the dough and just walk. The village is very walkable and if I'd knew it earlier I would've done just that because you get to reach more grounds for good photographs and IMO, the lake is really... nothing much. Giethoorn is stroller friendly so would make a wonderful place for family. If you are renting a boat, just rent an hour will do and be warned, navigation may get crazy with many boats in a small canal.

Oh, there is a SPAR located just a stone's throw away from Giethoorn (2minutes by foot) so you can get all your lunch and grocery fix there. One other very important thing to know, a matter of life and death... there is a public toilet near SPAR and costs €0.50 per entry. You have been warned.
