Its amazing what our everyday household products could do, which are not only cheap and efficient but also environmentally friendly but yet many of us may or may not know of. Recently while browsing on Yahoo!'s news homepage, I read about the many uses of salt and am very impressed by such a humble ingredient that I so often taken for granted. The blog disclaimed that the infos are sourced from the Salt Institute and some from his personal experience and I personally find it a good and beneficial read. A brief surprising use for salt are as follow and for a full range use, please refer to the SALT INSTITUTE:
Washing mouth - Mix equal parts of salt and baking soda as a mouth wash that sweetens the breath (I'm doing this now. Hopefully it helps with the breath)
Peeling eggs - Boiling eggs in salted water will make eggs peel easily. (As I made egg mayo sandwiches very often, I will be doing this in future)
Poaching eggs - Poaching eggs over salted water helps set the egg whites. (Has been doing it without realising so)
Improving coffee - A pinch of salt in coffee will enhance the flavor and remove the bitterness of over-cooked coffee. (Am doing it recently. It does taste different)
Fixing sticking iron - Sprinkle a little salt on a piece of paper and run the hot iron over it to remove rough, sticky spots. (Have not tried but will be doing this if the need arises)
Another versatile household product is the vinegar. I've got this info from THIS SITE and you may find other great stuffs there too! The following are the ingenious use of vinegar:
Reduce the gassiness due to consumption of any vegetables from the cabbage family (E.g broccoli or cauliflower) by adding a little vinegar to the cooking pot. (Will definitely try this in future... imagine the gas coming ou... or on second thought... Don't imagine!)
Solution to accidents. If an ‘accident’ occurs on a mattress, clean it with a solution of vinegar and water followed by pouring some baking soda onto the mattress. Once dried, vacuum the residue clean and voila! (Errr...)
Scratch-free. Wipe out itchy ears with undiluted vinegar to keep dogs and cats from scratching at them. Also, cats avoid vinegar, so to keep them from scratching furniture or sitting on certain areas, spray a vinegar solution onto the spot. (Have not tried this but find it interesting to share)
Get rid of ticks. This is original from me and you heard it here first. Ticks can be a major problem for your pets as it is with my pet Pom, Bon Bon after a walk in the park or exposure to dogs with ticks problem. The trick is to apply undiluted vinegar on major ticks' 'Hot Spot' E.g. back of the ears and in between paws, and other parts of the body followed by a blow with a hair dryer. The ticks will fall off or crawl out from your pets on its own as it seemed to me that they doesn't like the vapor from the vinegar. Also, if I am picking ticks manually from Bon Bon, I would also utilise vinegar. Instead of ripping the ticks off while the creatures' mandibles are clamped on the flesh of your pooch, apply a dap of vinegar on the ticks and wait for awhile before you lift the tick off and to ensure a clean kill, I just drop the ticks into a small bowl filled with vinegar/cider. ;)
Once last household products to add to the list is none other than Baking Soda and I believe most of you have heard of the great use of this item other than for ... well, baking. A short list of uses are as follow and for a full comprehensive range, you may go HERE:
Cleaner than clean hair. Sprinkle a small amount of baking soda into your palm along with your favorite shampoo. Shampoo as usual and rinse thoroughly–baking soda helps remove the residue that styling products leave behind so your hair is cleaner. (This really helped a lot! Sometimes when I waxed my hair to have that spunky effect, it is hard to clean them with shampoo alone as I can still feel the wax on my hair after washing. After trying this method, it feels fresh and clean... mmm~yeah~)
Making toothpaste. A paste made from baking soda and a 3 percent hydrogen peroxide solution can be used as an alternative to commercial non-fluoride toothpastes. (I personally have NOT tried this formula but instead is using a 3 part baking soda + 1 part grounded salt as a toothpaste to clean Bon Bon's teeth)
Deodorize Trashcans. Sprinkle baking soda on the bottom of your trashcan to keep stinky trash smells at bay.(I have tried this but the fact that I made it a point to dump my thrash bags whenever there are items that can get really nasty over time E.g. unwanted innards of fishes, makes it impossible for me to comment on how well it works... errgghh... the thought of someone who actually doesn't have the sense to dump the trash with those things are truly disgusting!)
Deodorize Pet Bedding/toys. Eliminate odors from your pets bedding or toys by sprinkling liberally with baking soda, wait 15 minutes (or longer for stronger odors), then vacuum up. (My wife simply dump the toy into the washing machine and wash it with mild cleaner and a dash of baking soda)
